Motivation is always a fascinating thing. Whilst most of us always strives to achieve, I also find it amazing to think about how each person's approach changes depending on their personaility type.
Good one Kate, I use my diagram below to try explain this difference in how one can perceive change (growth mindset) verses commitment (fixed mindset)
http://rethinkperfect.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/nutvratchet.gif?w=640&h=413
Basically I think it is how the words we use can form this type of polar thinking as mentioned in the article.
.
Are you an "agreement" type person that lives by hope or a "promise" type person that needs commitment? Anyone that uses the word commitment beware.

Hi Kate,
Asking a digital media guru to send me an e-mail is probably a huge faux pas. If not, I accept carrier pigeon or scroll delivered on horseback.
I understand that you are not in Melbourne much these days, but I can't think of anyone more suitable in the networking space to ask for a bit of advice.
Jodie (my girlfriend) and I have recently completed a cross the world cycle ride for charity. We're now looking to arrange an evening called 'Night of Adventure' in the Melbourne CBD - our new home. The model worked very well in London, and if you would like me to introduce you to a few people there, I'd be very happy to do so. We've lived and worked there for 30 years so have a few contacts...
Could you put me in touch with someone on the ground here in Melbourne covering you in your absense. I'm particularly interested in reaching out to people that have set themselves a challenge, physical, mental or emotional and can speak about this for ten minutes with the aid of computer presentation.
So far I have reached out to Brigitte Muir - the first Australian lady to climb Everest and the founders of Dodgeball - Melbourne.
Hope life is treating you well and we might hear from you in due course.

Hi Kate,

It's really nice for you to post these startups, especially for someone like me based in Silicon Valley to find out what's "innovative" in Australia. Here are some comments I have for these 5 startups:

(1). mmMule has a good idea trying to bridge travelers for some additional "economic" values other than getting to know each other. However, the "economic" value ought to be focused on things of much higher value so that it will make economic sense to go through the trouble of buying for someone and bringing it to that person. I had a somewhat similar idea but focused on targeted audiences to optimize the "economic value", and the socializing is just an added benefit.

(2). Discover App - Isn't Search in app stores supposed to do that?

(3). MeeMeep - the monetary value may be too small to be worthwhile.

(4). PointPal - This is clearly a useful service but it's a lot of work to find all the top merchants to participate.

(5). We TeachMe - Isn't this a bit too broad? There are too many subjects and knowledge in the world. Google Search provides many useful learning tools already. A small startup should probably focus on certain subjects rather than all the knowledge of the world !
